After receiving the Ten Commandments, Moses encourages the Israelites to not be afraid. But then he says that the fear of the Lord would keep them from sin. What’s going on? Should we fear or not?
“Moses said to the people, ‘Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin.’ The people stood far off, while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was.“
Exodus 20:20-21 ESV
There are two stances to God. The Israelites saw the thunder, smoke, and lightning – they experienced God’s power and heard his voice – and they hid from it in fear. Like Adam, hiding from God in his shame.
Moses, who had a relationship with God, had a different experience. He “had found favor with God, and God knew him by name.” (Ex 33:17) The power didn’t send him away. It drew him close. He came near.
God is powerful, almighty, eternal, and wise. He is just, strong, forgiving, and merciful. He is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. The One who was, who is, and is to come.
And because of Jesus, we can stand close to Him. We don’t fear anything – the thunder, lightning, or storms – because our fear and respect of God is greater than anything we can experience.
When the storms swirl and threaten, I’m reminded to draw close. His love is greater, and He calls me by name.
