Sons of Encouragement

If you’re like me, sometimes the Bible feels flat. You’re chugging through Leviticus, learning about sacrificial rules and skin diseases, when suddenly Aaron’s sons are burned up! Wait, what? And the only commentary the Bible gives is, “And Aaron remained silent.” My literary imagination starts spinning!

That’s why I loved “Sons of Encouragement” by Francine Rivers.

She goes into the lives of the side-kicks of the Bible. Aaron, Caleb, Jonathan, Amos, and Silas. To be perfectly honest, I haven’t read all of it, yet. It’s written as a series of separate books, placed together in one collection. But as I work through my Bible again now, I hope to pair it with these Biblical Fiction Narratives.

What was it like for the priests, day in and day out? What was Aaron possibly thinking when he made the calf? What about Caleb- who had to walk around the wilderness watching everyone die until he finally entered the promised land?

Though we can’t know for sure, Francine Rivers gives us an honest perspective that makes the Bible characters a lot more human- and a lot like us.

Happy reading!

(I also LOVE “Lineage of Grace” and have read it multiple times! But that’s for another post. It moves through the lives of the women in the lineage of Jesus.)
