It’s not lost until mom looks: a conversation about faith

At our house we say, “It’s not lost until mom looks for it.” Is it my family’s faulty eyesight that prevents them from seeing what I think is clearly visible? Do I need to make them all eye doctor appointments ASAP?

I think it has more to do with faith.

We were camping, and I asked my son to get a ziplock back out of the tub. I see him later without the baggie. He couldn’t find it. Of course I step over and have my hand on it in less than 5 seconds. This happens all the time.

And here’s what I think: I know I put the baggies in the tub, so when I went to look, I went with confidence. My son was looking with indifference.

See the connection to faith? Because I had faith the bags were there, I didn’t hesitate. Even if I had to move a few items around in my search, I was looking with certainty. With faith.

My son didn’t have that faith, and his search came up empty.

Oh God, increase my faith! So I pray with boldness. So I walk on the water with you. So together, we’ll see mountains move.

I don’t want to approach life like my children when they casually wander aimlessly after their lost shoe or the paper plates I asked them for.

Jesus had faith because as God, He knew that anything was possible. Everything was made from nothing, and it was all under His control. And guess what- it still is!

I want to move with purpose, confident that everything He said is still true.

Who’s with me??

“You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.”
