To my young son’s annoyance, most songs on the radio are about new love, old love, or scorned love. Seems like that tale is as old as time.
In Deuteronomy 31, God reminds the people to fear Him and follow Him. Just before they enter the land He’s given them, they are reminded of all He’s done for them. His special favor, His power, and His great love.
Tragically, God tells Moses just verses later, “I know what they are inclined to do… break my covenant, whore after foreign Gods…”
Then God and Moses write a song.
The song would serve as a reminder to future generations of the faithful love of God. It would rebuke the people for their unfaithful rebellion. It would call them back to the promise.
God wrote the breakup song before it ever happened and yet He loved them anyway.
If I knew…
The rejection. Betrayal. Harsh words. Hurt. Would I love anyway?
God would. He did. He does. And He will continue to. Because He is love.
My mind is spinning around this thought.
Before the Creation of the world, He knew the story. He created us, loved us, grieved over our rebellion, displayed passion and beauty and majesty in all its forms, and yet we reject it for gods of our own making.
We cannot keep the law. We cannot remain faithful and true. We cannot honor our covenants and gain victory over our rebellious hearts.
We can’t.
But He can.
When He lives in us, He makes us new. We need that! Our old ways are broken and painful and ruthless.
We need Him to make us new.
While we were still sinners…
In the midst of our gross and filthy sins, He showed love in Jesus and died for us.
From the beginning, He knew, and He loved.
Oh God, by Your Power, help me love like that.
Incline my heart… not to follow my own ways… but to fear Your name. And from that, help me love like you.
